Multimedia Department - Internet Connection
Before You Start
When connecting to the Internet in the Illini Union, these settings will
need to be entered into your computer. These numbers need to be entered
into your computer before you will be able to connect to the Internet.
You cannot use the numbers that you usually use at your place of business,
even if it is another campus location. If you have used the Illini Union network
previously, please check before using a previously assigned IP Address, as this
IP Address may have been reassigned to someone else in another location in the building.

Entering Settings
To enter these settings into your computer, right-click on the "Network Neighborhood"
or similar icon on your desktop to get to the necessary dialogue box.
Connecting Your Computer
To connect your computer to the wall jack in the Illini Union meeting rooms,
you will need to use an RJ-11 to RJ-45 cable. If you do not have this cable,
one can be obtained from the Illini Union Multimedia Department, or purchased at
ECE Stores. A regular phone cable (RJ-11 to RJ-11) will not work, and neither
will a category 5 (RJ-45 to RJ-45) cable.
When connecting your computer to the wall jack, the RJ-11 (smaller connector)
must be plugged into the wall jack and the RJ-45 (larger connector) must be plugged
into your computer's Ethernet jack. The network connection will not work if the cable
is reversed, even though you get a green link light on your network adapter.
Plug the RJ-11 connector of your network cable into the bottom/right network jack.
All phone/date jacks in the Illini Union meeting rooms have two parts. The top (or left)
jack ("A" side) is wired for phone service. The bottom (or right) jack ("B" side)
is wired for network service. These jacks are not interchangeable.
Security Precautions
With the Microsoft operating system's vulnerability to computer viruses, make
sure all current updates are applied to your computer. If your computer is, or
becomes infected, while online, Campus Security will take it off-line until it is
cleaned up.
Troubleshooting
If, after entering these settings into your computer, you have problems connecting
to the Internet, contact the Illini Union Multimedia Department at
3-0891 (from an on-campus phone).
