Grounds for the Garden

Body

Grounds for your Garden Program

This program aims to lessen the amount of grounds in the landfill while helping with gardens/plants.

  • Stop at the Illini Union Bookstore Starbucks
  • Grab a five-pound bag of used coffee grounds to use in your garden or plants (these are located just before the counter)
  • The bags are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. If you don’t see any bags, please ask the barista
  • Baristas package the used grounds inside the same foil packaging that the beans originally came in, recycling those bags

The Benefits of Adding Coffee Grounds to Gardens:

  • Promoting plant growth
  • Repelling ants and slugs
  • Enticing earthworms

For Compost Pile

  • Combine with ‘brown’ materials for enriched compost. Experts recommend up to 20% coffee grounds in a compost pile.
