Grounds for the Garden
Body
Grounds for your Garden Program
This program aims to lessen the amount of grounds in the landfill while helping with gardens/plants.
- Stop at the Illini Union Bookstore Starbucks
- Grab a five-pound bag of used coffee grounds to use in your garden or plants (these are located just before the counter)
- The bags are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. If you don’t see any bags, please ask the barista
- Baristas package the used grounds inside the same foil packaging that the beans originally came in, recycling those bags
The Benefits of Adding Coffee Grounds to Gardens:
- Promoting plant growth
- Repelling ants and slugs
- Enticing earthworms
For Compost Pile
- Combine with ‘brown’ materials for enriched compost. Experts recommend up to 20% coffee grounds in a compost pile.
